Jars can be a challenge for the elderly or for people with limited strength, but I’m in my mid-30s and in good health, and I still find jars impossible to open Every so often.
Why are jars so hard to open? The main reason is one you’ll be able to hardly begrudge: it’s the vacuum seal that’s keeping your food fresh. Jars are on a regular basis vacuum-sealed for freshness, creating a seal that draws the lid on tightly and keeps out bacteria. Every so often there’s also trace amounts of food or liquid that can be left in the threading of the jar’s lid, creating a glue-like effect when it dries and sets.
You can break the internal vacuum seal with a dedicated jar-opening tool to do most of the hard work for you. There are lots of “gadgets” that have been developed to help overcome this difficulty. When you look on Amazon you see literally hundreds. But which one to pick?
